Start by downloading Thunderbird.
The download link featured on thunderbird.net website should take you to the most recent version for your device and operating system.
You can use Thunderbird's automatic account setup wizard to do most of the configuration.
Click through all of the following numbered tabs to see the complete automatic setup process.
The first time you launch the Thunderbird app the Account Setup dialog window will open for you.
Start by using your @mail.mayfirst.org
address to configure Thunderbird so that it finds the correct May First server settings automatically. Even if your eventual goal is to configure another address like youraddress@yourowndomain.org
start by using the May First account name you've configured that address to deliver to. You will be able to add additional addresses in a later step.
In the screenshot below example is our May First Mailbox account name. Substitute example with the name of your own May First account with Mailbox access.
In the example below Thunderbird has found that it can use SSL/TLS encryption and an IMAP connection to download and sync mail to the server.
You can also choose a POP3 type connection if you prefer however you cannot switch betwen POP3 and IMAP protocol setups without creating a new account configuration. Read more about the differences between IMAP and POP3 protocols.
We recommend accepting the suggested settings. You can make additional changes to your account settings later.
If your configuration is not found successfully you can select cancel and go back and check your username and password. You can also select Configure manually to change your account settings.
If the account was successfully created you can Finish the account creation and you are now ready to begin downloading and sending mails through May First servers.
If you want to add additional email addresses associated with this Mailbox or check other details now is a good time to review your account settings.
You can open the Account setup dialog window again at any time through the Thunderbird menu
The automatic Account Setup is the place to begin if you are configuring an email with Thunderbird for the first time. If you need to review or make changes to an existing account check your account settings instead of creating the same account again.
Use the account settings dialog to make adjustments or fix problems with your account configuration.
You can reach the account settings at any time through the Thunderbird menu by selecting Account Settings. You can also find the Account Settings icon on the home screen and in other contextual menus.
The main window of the Account Settings dialog displays the details of the accounts and configuration options selected in the left hand column.
In the image below we see the Acount name and Default Identity settings of our new account.
Thunderbird refers to any additional email addresses associated linked to the same account as email identities.
In the May First control panel you can configure one or more of your own addresses like youraddress@yourowndomain.org
to deliver to a May First user mailbox. You can configure Thunderbird to use that address by default to send email.
Start by changing your Account Name and Default identity.
The Account Name setting is just a local identifier and you can set it to anything that helps you remember which account this. The Default Identity will be the default sending address used any time you want to send an e-mail with this account.
You can add additional email addresses associated with this same mailbox through the Manage Identities dialog. After setting up additional identities you can choose from which identity to send each email.
If you are having problems sending or receiving email from this account you can review your mail server settings manually by selecting the Server Settings for this account from the left hand column in the Account Settings window.
The first settings shown are those related to how Thunderbird will download and receive emails for this account.
Your Server Type will be IMAP Mail Server or POP Mail Server depending on how you initially setup the account.
Server Name: should always be mail.mayfirst.org
User Name: is just your Mailbox account name without the @mail.mayfirst.org

The SMTP server settings control how Thunderbird will send outgoing emails for this account.
From the Account Settings screen you can use the Edit SMTP server button to open the SMTP Server settings dialog.

If you've setup your account using IMAP then Thunderbird can view and sync with any mail folders saved on the server. Subscribing to remote folders within Thunderbird means it will display local copies of those folders and email. When you first setup the account Thunderbird subscribes to every folder it finds on the server.
In some situations there may be folders in your account on the server that appear through webmail or through other mail applications syncing to your account but do not appear in Thunderbird. This can be fixed by manually subscribing to these folders.
Right click on mail account name in Folder Pane and select 'Subscribe'. A new window should open showing a list of folders. Select the folders you want to see in Thunderbird and click on 'Subscribe' click on OK
